The focal point: where the eye looks first

You enter a room and your gaze settles on a single thing. If you choose it, the room feels thoughtfully designed. If not, your eye jumps from one object to another and the room feels cluttered.

The Glance, from the Door

Stand in the doorway and see where your gaze lands without turning your head. That is where the focal point should be. The sofa and armchairs should face it, not have their backs to it.

What is a focal point

The focal point is the element that first catches the eye: a fireplace, a window with a view, a paneled wall, a large chandelier, a freestanding bathtub, a large painting. Every room needs one, but only one. Two equally powerful elements compete with each other.

How to choose it

  1. Use what the room has: a large window, a fireplace, a niche. If they exist, they are the natural focal point.
  2. If it doesn't have one: create it. A statement chandelier, an accent wall, or a large painting transforms a neutral room.
  3. In the bathroom: a freestanding bathtub, a large round mirror, or a stone-clad wall.
  4. In the bedroom: the wall behind the bed, with a tall headboard and symmetrical wall lights.

Furniture is oriented towards it

Place the sofa facing or at an angle to the focal point, never with its back to it. The other large items are placed to the side, like a frame. If the television and the fireplace are on different walls, move them to the same wall or choose one of them as the focal point.

Lighting highlights it

An unlit focal point disappears in the evening. Place an accent light on it that is approximately three times brighter than the general lighting: a directed spotlight, a picture light, or the built-in LED lighting of a painting. A statement chandelier is its own light source.

Balance around it

Leave open space around the focal point and keep the decor understated. Many small, colorful objects near it detract from its impact. The 60-30-10 rule helps: the focal point usually features the accent color.

Designer's tip: In a long living room, a large chandelier above the seating area defines the room better than any rug or colored wall.

Common mistakes

  • A statement chandelier and a bold wallpapered wall in the same room.
  • The sofa with its back to the window with a view.
  • The focal point left in the dark in the evening.
