The right Christmas tree: height, width, and lights
A Christmas tree that’s too tall leaves no room for the top, while one that’s too wide crowds the room. With the ceiling height and a measuring tape, you can choose the right tree before the holidays.
Christmas trees for high and low ceilings
Artificial fir trees measuring 300, 240, and 180 cm, and a 30 m light set with warm light. Choose according to your ceiling height.

The fir tree and the room
Measure the ceiling height and subtract 20–30 cm: this is the maximum height of the Christmas tree, including the stand and topper. The width of the tree is around 60% of its height, so a 240 cm tree needs a clear radius of almost 150 cm.
Height
| Ceiling height | Suitable tree |
|---|---|
| 2.4–2.5 m | 180–210 cm |
| 2.6–2.8 m | 210–240 cm |
| 3 m | 240–270 cm |
| over 3.3 m | 300 cm or more |
The height in the specifications usually includes the stand. Add the height of the tree topper (10–25 cm) when calculating.
Width and placement
A classic tree is approximately 60% as wide as it is tall; a slim one, 40–45%. Leave 90 cm of walking space around the tree on the side you walk past. In small rooms, a slim tree or a corner option keeps the room usable. Place the tree at least 1 m away from radiators, fireplaces, and other heat sources.
How many lights
For a richly lit tree, allow 70–100 LEDs for every 30 cm of height; for a subtle effect, 40–50.
| Tree | Subtle | Rich |
|---|---|---|
| 180 cm | 250–300 LED | 420–600 LED |
| 210 cm | 300–350 LED | 500–700 LED |
| 240 cm | 320–400 LED | 560–800 LED |
| 300 cm | 400–500 LED | 700–1000 LED |
Wrap the lights from the inside out on each large branch, not just in a spiral on the surface: the tree appears lit from within.
Light color
Warm light (2700–3000 K) matches the rest of the lights in your home and with gold, red, or natural ornaments. Cool or multicolored light works better outdoors. For outdoor use and balconies, choose fixtures with IP44 or higher.
Designer's tip: choose ornaments in no more than three colors, following the 60-30-10 rule: a dominant color, a secondary color, and an accent. The tree looks more elegant than with ornaments in every color.
Common mistakes
- Tree bought without measuring the ceiling, without room for the topper.
- Too few lights, only on the surface of the tree.
- Tree next to the radiator or in the way to the balcony.
