Correct distances in the bathroom

A beautiful bathroom where you bump into the sink or feel cramped on the toilet is not a successful bathroom. A few centimeters left in the right place make the bathroom comfortable every day.

Sketch

The layout of a 220 × 250 cm bathroom

The toilet should be at least 40 cm from the wall or any other object. Leave 60 cm clear in front, ideally 70–80.

Leave 70 cm in front of the sink so you can lean over comfortably. A 90 × 90 cm shower fits in a corner without blocking the walkway.

Item heights

  • Sink: 85 cm (80–90 cm). For vanity units, the height is measured to the top of the worktop.
  • Toilet: 40–45 cm to the seat. Wall-hung toilets can be installed at the desired height.
  • Shower mixer: 100–110 cm from the floor.
  • Shower rail: 200–210 cm, or 10 cm above the height of the tallest family member.
  • Bath mixer: 15–20 cm above the bath rim.
  • Toilet roll holder: 60–70 cm from the floor, 15–30 cm in front of the toilet.
  • Towel rail: 100–120 cm, within easy reach from the shower.

Shower and bath

A shower enclosure should be at least 80 × 80 cm, but 90 × 90 cm is the size that allows you to turn around without touching the walls. For a walk-in shower without a door, choose at least 90 × 120 cm to prevent water from splashing out of the shower area. A freestanding bath requires 15–20 cm of space around it for cleaning.

Double sink

For two basins, the vanity unit should be at least 120 cm wide, ideally 140 cm or more. Leave 70–80 cm between the basin centres so that two people can use them at the same time.

Designer's tip: draw out the bathroom layout on the floor with masking tape before ordering. Open the door, sit where the toilet will be, and check that there is enough room for your knees.

Common mistakes

  • The bathroom door hitting the toilet or sink.
  • The sink too close to the wall, with the elbow pressed against the tiles.
  • A 70 × 70 cm shower enclosure that is too small to bend over in.
