Pendant lights above the table and island
Above the table, the chandelier should illuminate the plates, not the eyes of those sitting at the table. Three simple measures make the difference between a pleasant dinner and one with the light in your face.

Between pendulums
Above the island, with at least 15 cm to the edges of the countertop.
Table, chandelier, and the distance between them
The standard table height is 75 cm. Add 75–90 cm and the bottom of the chandelier will be at 150–165 cm from the floor: below the eye level of someone standing, above someone sitting in a chair.
For ceilings over 2.7 m, go up to 90 cm, so the chandelier does not look like it is hanging.
The correct height
Leave 75–90 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the chandelier. At this height, the light falls on the table, people at the table can see each other, and the chandelier does not enter the field of vision. At the kitchen island, where you stand, maintain the same distance from the countertop.
How wide the chandelier should be
- Round or square table: the chandelier should be between half and two-thirds the diameter of the table. For a 120 cm table, choose 60–80 cm.
- Rectangular table: a linear chandelier with a length of at most two-thirds the length of the table. Leave at least 15 cm at each end.
- Safety rule: the chandelier should be at least 30 cm narrower than the table, so no one hits it when standing up.
How many pendants above the island
| Island length | Pendants | Distance between them |
|---|---|---|
| under 150 cm | 1 linear or 2 small | 60 cm |
| 150–240 cm | 2 or 3 | 60–75 cm |
| over 240 cm | 3 or one linear chandelier | 75 cm |
An odd number looks more balanced on long islands. Small pendants (under 25 cm) are placed closer together, large ones further apart.
The right light for the table
Choose warm light, 2700–3000 K, and a color rendering index (CRI) of at least 90: the food looks natural. A dimmer or remote control lets you switch from working light to dinner light.
Designer's tip: center the chandelier over the table, not the room. If the ceiling box is not above the table, move it or use a decorative hook that displaces the cable.
Common mistakes
- Chandelier mounted at living room height, too high above the table.
- Pendants too large for a narrow island.
- Cool light (6000 K) in the dining room, which makes the food look pale.
