Bathroom mirror: size, height and light
The mirror is the first thing you see in the morning and the most used item in the bathroom after the faucet. Its size, height, and lighting matter more than the frame.

The sink, the mirror, and the light
Start with the sink: the countertop at 85 cm, the mirror 20–30 cm above it. The mirror should not exceed the width of the furniture and should be centered at around 160 cm.
Side lighting at face level does not cast shadows under the eyes. If the mirror has built-in LEDs, wall lights are no longer necessary.
How big should it be
The mirror should be no wider than the furniture beneath it, ideally 5–10 cm narrower on each side. For an 80 cm vanity, choose a mirror 60–80 cm wide. For double vanities, you have two options: one long mirror spanning the entire vanity, or two identical mirrors, each centered over its own sink.
How high to mount it
- Bottom edge: 20–30 cm above the countertop or faucet to keep it from getting splashed.
- Center: around 155–165 cm from the floor, close to eye level.
- Top edge: at least 185–190 cm high, so that taller people can see themselves too.
For mirrors taller than 100 cm, the center can be higher, but the bottom edge should remain 20–30 cm above the countertop.
Lighting for the mirror
Overhead lighting casts shadows under the eyes and chin. Side lighting or integrated lighting around the mirror illuminates the face evenly. Choose neutral 4000 K lighting with a CRI of 90 or higher for applying makeup and shaving. Mirrors with adjustable lighting (3000/4000/6000 K) let you see how your makeup looks in warm evening light too.
Features worth having
- Defogging: a heated film behind the mirror keeps the central area clear after a shower.
- Sensor or touch control: turn on the light without a separate switch.
- Mirrored cabinet: extra storage, useful in small bathrooms.
- IP44: the minimum splash protection for any LED mirror mounted near a sink.
Designer's tip: choose the mirror shape based on the sink. A round or oval sink looks good under a round mirror; a straight countertop calls for a rectangular mirror with slightly rounded corners.
Common mistakes
- A mirror wider than the vanity, which looks like it's floating.
- Mounting it too high, with your face at the bottom of the mirror.
- A single bright light overhead.
