Bedroom: light for rest

The bedroom is the only room where light is used more extensively while standing up. Hence its special rules.

The bed, nightstands, and wall lamps

The wall lights are mounted at 120–140 cm above the floor, above the bedside tables, and shine downwards onto the book. The bedside tables are the same height as the mattress, so you can reach them without getting up.

General lighting

The bedroom needs less general lighting than the living room: 100–150 lumens per square meter. A chandelier or ceiling light with diffused, dimmable light is sufficient. Avoid spotlights aimed directly at the bed: from a lying position, the light shines into your eyes.

Reading light

Each side of the bed gets its own light source: a wall sconce or a reading lamp. Wall sconces are mounted at 120–140 cm above the floor, 15–20 cm beyond the edge of the headboard, with the light directed downwards. Each has its own switch, so one person can read without disturbing the other.

Color temperature

Choose 2700 K for the general and reading lights. Warm, low light in the evening helps you transition to sleep; cool, blue-rich light has the opposite effect. If the dressing room is in the bedroom, its light can be 3000–4000 K, with a CRI of 90+, so you can choose clothing colors correctly.

The bed and bedside tables

  • Bedside tables should be the same height as the mattress, plus or minus 5 cm.
  • Leave 60–75 cm of free space on either side of the bed and at its foot.
  • The rug should extend 45–60 cm beyond the sides of the bed, so you can put your feet on it in the morning.

Decor

The wall behind the bed is the bedroom's natural focal point: a tall headboard, a painting, or a large decorative wall sconce. Large plants soften the corners, while natural textiles (linen, wool) add texture without cluttering the room.

Designer's tip: put the bedroom chandelier on a dimmer. At 20–30% power, it becomes the perfect evening light, without any other light fixtures.

Common mistakes

  • A powerful spotlight directly above the bed.
  • A single switch for both wall sconces.
  • Bedside tables much lower than the mattress.
