Ghid 12Design Rules
The two-thirds rule
Why does a painting look small above the sofa or a chandelier look lost above the table? Most of the time, it’s a matter of proportion. The two-thirds rule solves almost every case.
Proportions in a large living room
A statement chandelier, a 160 cm vertical painting, a sculptural floor lamp, and a tall plant: each sized to fit the surrounding space.

-
2/3
Sofa – wall
The sofa takes up about two-thirds of the wall's length.
-
2/3
Painting – sofa
The painting or gallery wall is two-thirds the width of the sofa.
-
1/2–2/3
Chandelier – table
The chandelier is between half and two-thirds the width of the table.
The wall, the sofa, and the painting
On a 4.5 m wall, the right sofa is around 3 m wide. Above it, the painting is around 2 m wide, 20–25 cm above the backrest.
Why two-thirds
The eye perceives proportions close to the golden ratio (approximately 1.6) as balanced. Two-thirds is an easy-to-calculate version of this ratio: an object that occupies two-thirds of the space below or behind it appears intentionally sized—neither cramped nor lost.
Where to apply the rule
| Object | Relative to | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa | wall length | 4.5 m wall → ~3 m sofa |
| Picture or group of pictures | width of the furniture below it | 240 cm sofa → ~160 cm picture |
| Coffee table | sofa length | 240 cm sofa → ~160 cm coffee table |
| Chandelier | table width | 100 cm table → 50–65 cm chandelier |
| Mirror | width of the console or sink | 120 cm console → ~80 cm mirror |
And height
The rule also works vertically. A floor lamp or tall plant looks good when it reaches two-thirds of the room's height (for a 2.7 m ceiling, around 1.8 m). Curtains mounted near the ceiling, rather than just above the window, make the wall appear taller.
The rug
The living room rug is large enough when the front legs of the sofa and armchairs rest on it. In the dining room, the rug extends at least 60 cm beyond the table on each side, so the chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.
Designer's tip: if your picture ends up being too small, don't buy another one. Group it with two more pictures of the same height, and you'll reach two-thirds of the sofa.
Common mistakes
- Small picture, alone, above a long sofa.
- Coffee table as wide as the sofa or, conversely, very small.
- Small rug, floating in the middle of the room, without furniture on it.
