The entrance hall: first impression
The hallway is the first and last space you see every day. Even if it’s small, three elements make it welcoming: light, a mirror, and a place to put your things.

The light and the mirror in the hallway
The up-and-down wall lights accentuate the walls and make the hallway appear taller. The 80–90 cm console table by the door, with the mirror above it, becomes the place for your keys and a final glance before you leave.
Hallway lighting
Hallways rarely have natural light, so artificial lighting is twice as important. You have three options, which can be combined:
- Ceiling lights for hallways with ceilings under 2.5 m, spaced 2.5–3 m apart.
- Wall lights at 160–170 cm, which illuminate the walls and your face. Choose shallow models for narrow hallways.
- Chandelier or pendant light in large or double-height hallways, where the height allows for a statement piece.
3000 K lighting bridges the gap between rooms with warm light and the kitchen or bathroom with whiter light. A motion sensor turns on the light when you enter with your hands full.
The mirror
A large mirror in the hallway visually doubles the width and reflects light. A tall mirror (at least 150 cm) lets you check your whole outfit before you leave. Mount the mirror on the long wall of the hallway, not directly opposite the front door, where it will only reflect the door.
Furniture
- A console or narrow chest of drawers (25–35 cm deep), 80–90 cm high.
- A place to sit while putting on your shoes: a bench or stool.
- Coat hooks at 160–180 cm for adults and 100–120 cm for children.
Decor
The hallway is the perfect place for a large picture or a tall plant at the entrance. Keep the pictures at a height of 145–155 cm along the entire length of the hallway and repeat the color or finish from the main room, so the transition feels natural.
Designer's tip: an up-and-down wall light in a narrow hallway makes the ceiling appear higher. Light only from above makes it look lower.
Common mistakes
- A single ceiling light at the end of a long hallway.
- Deep furniture that narrows the passage to under 90 cm.
- A mirror mounted directly opposite the front door.
