Wall lights: heights and distances
The wall light provides illumination without taking up space on furniture or the floor. Mounted at the right height, it gives off a pleasant light and doesn't blind anyone.
Decorative crystal and metal wall sconces
Wall lights that illuminate and decorate at the same time. On each product page, you’ll find the dimensions so you can choose the correct mounting height.

At eye level
An adult's eye level is around 160 cm. Wall lights mounted at 150–170 cm illuminate faces and walls without shining light directly into the eyes.
In long hallways, maintain 2.5–3 m between wall lights and start with one 1–1.5 m from the entrance.
In the hallway and living room
Mount the wall lights at 150–170 cm from the floor. In hallways with high ceilings (over 2.8 m), go up to 170–180 cm. Leave 2.5–3 m between two wall lights, and mount the first one 1–1.5 m from a corner or door.
By the bed
Reading wall lights are placed at 120–140 cm from the floor, which is 50–60 cm above the mattress, and 15–20 cm outside the edge of the bed frame. The light falls on the book, not on your partner's pillow. Choose models with adjustable arms or shades so that the light is directed downwards.
By the bathroom mirror
For even light on your face, place one wall light on each side of the mirror, at 160–170 cm from the floor and 90–100 cm apart. A single wall light above the mirror also works: mount it at 190–200 cm, slightly tilted forward. In the bathroom, the wall light must have at least IP44.
Above a painting or a television
- A wall light for a painting is mounted 15–30 cm above the frame and illuminates only the painting.
- On either side of a television or a large mirror, wall lights create symmetry. Keep the same distance from the object in the middle.
How to choose a wall light
- Up and down light: for hallways, it accentuates the walls and visually increases the height.
- Crystal and metal: for the living room and bedroom, where the wall light is also a decorative object.
- Small depth: in narrow hallways, the wall light should not protrude from the wall by more than 10–12 cm.
Designer's tip: determine the height before painting and mark the electrical box with the electrician. Moving a wall light after finishing means plaster repairs.
Common mistakes
- Wall lights mounted too low in the hallway, where you hit them with your shoulder.
- Wall lights with a visible bulb at eye level that blind you.
- Uneven distances between wall lights on the same wall.
